Kakadu Community Cultural Workshops
Spend time on Murumburr Clan Country with a hands-on cultural experience that offers a deeper understanding of life, stories and traditions in Kakadu. This 2.5-hour workshop runs from 9:00 am to 11:30 am and begins with a Welcome to Country, setting the tone for a respectful and meaningful experience.
The workshop includes a guided history walk and talk by the billabong, where participants learn about the landscape, seasonal changes and cultural connections to the area. Guests are then invited to enjoy tea and damper along with a bush tucker experience, offering a taste of traditional foods and practices.
Activities are shared in a relaxed and inclusive setting. Women take part in traditional weaving, while men engage in painting, each guided by local knowledge and cultural practice. Visitors also have the opportunity to explore and purchase authentic arts and crafts from the on-site gallery space, supporting local artists and community.
This experience is ideal for those wanting to connect more deeply with Kakadu beyond sightseeing, offering time to learn, participate and engage on Country.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Kakadu rock art tours take?
Most guided rock art tours in Kakadu range from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the experience selected. A standard Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) rock art tour typically runs for around 1.5 hours, allowing time to walk between galleries, learn about the artwork and ask questions. Community-based cultural workshops may extend to approximately 2.5 hours, providing additional hands-on activities and discussion. Duration can vary slightly based on group size and seasonal conditions.
When is the best time of year to visit Kakadu for cultural tours?
The dry season, generally from May to September, is considered the best time to visit Kakadu for rock art and cultural tours. During this period, road access is more reliable, humidity is lower and walking conditions are more comfortable. Many tours operate exclusively during these months due to weather and safety considerations. Travellers planning a visit during the peak dry season are advised to book in advance as availability can be limited.
Are Kakadu cultural tours suitable for families?
Many Kakadu cultural tours are suitable for families, particularly those with school-aged children who can engage with walking tours and storytelling. Rock art sites such as Burrungkuy include established walking paths, though some sections may involve uneven surfaces. Parents should consider the length of the tour, weather conditions and each child’s ability to participate comfortably. Cultural tours can provide valuable educational experiences, offering children the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal history, art and connection to Country in a respectful setting.
