Job Title: Campground Host/s

Location: Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp

Employment Type: Part-time (June to September 2025), approx. 20 hours per week

Job Summary: Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated campground hosts for the 2025 season. The hosts will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the campground, providing excellent customer service, and ensuring a pleasant stay for all guests. Hosts are required to provide their own accommodation, ideally in their own caravan.

Key Responsibilities:

Clean guest tents and wash linen.
Clean and maintain shared bathroom facilities.
Maintain the grounds, including gardening and minor repairs.
Serve meals to guests.
Provide general customer service and assist guests with enquiries.
Ensure the campground is safe and welcoming for all visitors.

Qualifications:

Previous experience in hospitality or customer service is preferred.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
Must provide own accommodation (caravan preferred).

Working Hours:

Part-time, flexible hours from June to September 2025.

Pay rate: The wage for this role is for one person, however we are happy if a couple wish to share the duties. Hourly rate of $35/hour.

We offer a place for you to park your van/trailer with stunning views over our billabong. Potable water is available however volunteers should be predominately self-sufficient. The nearest dump point is 8km away at Cooinda Lodge.

Fire Management

For many thousands of years Aboriginal people have used fire in a very sophisticated way to manage their land and to ensure adequate production of food resources. This involved a level of complex land management that required the careful and strategic use of burning.

One such example, is bush honey and the species of native bees that produce it. To produce bush honey the native bees require flowers, but if fires burn too hot, the trees and bushes are scorched, and will produce no flowers in that year as all their growth energy goes into producing new leaves rather than flowers and fruit.

Aboriginal people burnt areas very carefully to make sure the ecological processes relating to food were maintained. This meant differing the intensity and times of burning of fires to achieve the desired outcomes. Some areas would be burned regularly, whilst other areas would be managed to keep fire away from certain places, such as monsoon forest patches, where fruit would be available later in the season. The results were a patchwork of areas at different stages of growth providing resources for people and wildlife.

Kakadu Billabong Bird Species

Kakadu is a bird lover’s paradise – home to more than a third of Australia’s bird species – and the safari camp location is an ideal place for birdwatchers to view a staggering number of native birds.

The accommodation at the site provides a great base as you can bird watch from your bed!. Your alarm clock is likely to be the call of the majestic White bellied sea eagle Haliaeetus leucogaster, or Marrawurdi as it is known locally,. Their call is often the first call of the morning. There is also an amazing dawn chorus.

Walking the edges of the billabong system and the adjacent woodland provides great opportunities to see local bird species. At this time of year the birds are congregated around the water increasing your chances of getting a good view. There are many plants flowering in the area and this is attracting many birds.

You will need to bring your own food and drinking water. There are showers and toilets at the camp and most of the huts now have fans and USB charging ports to recharge cameras, phones and electronic devices. There is no mobile phone reception from the location.

Full wet season
Waters peak at their highest
Fish are nice and fat
Worledon, the green ant mother, is ready to gather and eat
Wirndilk are ready to collect to dye panduanus for making baskets and pandanus crafts
Ginga, the saltwater crocodile, are on the move, travelling throughout the river systems

Bangerreng

Last Knock’em down storms bring fierce wind and rain
Spear grass seeds are brown that indicates the bamurru (magpie geese) are laying their eggs which are ready to eat
Many fish have spawned

Yekke

Rains cease
Ngarribolkwurlke – we start to burn fires on country as soon as the rains stop towards the end of April
Angindjek ready to harvest for eating
Wetlands turn into feeding frenzy
Egrets in abundance feeding on insects as the waters recede
Whistle ducks return in their numbers
Fish spawned
Fish and turtles fat
Anwirndilk, heamadorum plant, start to grow within a couple of weeks in areas that have been burnt
Red eye pigeon start to lay their egg in the patches of grassy regrowth that have been burnt

Wurrgeng

The orange flowers of the eucalypts beginning to flower indicate the change of season
Coldest time of the year
Gumugen, freshwater crocodile, are laying eggs in the sand dunes of Kakadu creek systems, indicated by the blooming of the andjedj – bright yellow flowers of the the kapok tree. This is also a good time to collect pods for the yellow fluorescent dye for pandanus weaving
The beautiful pink flowers of the calytrix indicate freshwater crocodiles are fat and pignosed turtle are laying their eggs
Magpie geese and ducks are getting fat and ready to eat
Kapok flowering indicating fresh water crocodiles nesting and also pig nose turtle another indicated is the turkey bush tree.

Gurrung

Andudjmi starts to flower

Time to hunt for Almangayi on the floodplains
Bamurru, magpie geese, are really fat from anguladj the water chestnut good time to eat both
Freshwater mangroves start to bloom beautiful red dangling flowers

Kinship System

People are also a part of this system. Each bininj person is locked into the system by their birth inheritance.

There is a very complex classification system that maps out relationships for people and the natural world around us. This is sometimes referred to as a Kinship system. The image shows some of the animals of the area and the groups they belong to.

Bird Watching and Bird Species

The Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp location is a very special place for bird watchers. In June 2017 renowned naturalist and Kakadu expert Ian Morris counted 44 species of birds in the hour leading up to sunset from the verandah of a cabin in the camp. In subsequent visits Ian noted still more species around the camp.

The camp is situated in the transition zone between woodlands and the wetland systems that Kakadu is so renowned for. It is a part of the country that is still very much as explorers like Ludwig Leichardt saw as he followed the Jim Jim creek system down into the famous wetlands.

These early explorers were even more aware of the dynamism of ‘the new frontier’ and their diaries are full of it:

“No part of the country we had passed was so well provided with game as this; and of which we could have easily obtained an abundance, had not our shot all been expended. The cackling of geese, the quacking of ducks, the sonorous note of the native companion (Brolga), and the noises of black and white cockatoos, and a great variety of other birds, gave to the country, both day and night, an extraordinary appearance of animation…..”

Dawn Chorus

The dawn chorus at Kakadu Billabong Safari Camp is sensational; you can enjoy it from your bed, or you can get out and about and really soak up the atmosphere.
